When participating in annual dog shows, we are often asked, “Why should we use a Martingale Collar?” and “What is a Martingale Collar?”. The questions usually come from novice sighthound owners who are attending their first sighthound show events. Even so, it’s always good to remind ourselves about the virtues of using martingale collars for the correct type of dog.
Different types of dog collars
With many different dog collars on the market, it isn’t easy to know where to start. Here is a quick guide:
- House and buckle collars are for your average dog whose head circumference is the same size as their head. Most standard breeds can use these collars.
- Martingale collars have an extra loop that gently tightens to prevent dogs from slipping their collar.
- Greyhound collars are another name for martingale collars.
Martingale collars have primarily replaced older choke chain collars, which can seriously damage a dog’s trachea muscle tissues and cause spinal injuries. Avoiding this scenario is where the martingale collar comes into its own. Essentially martingales or greyhound collars are more humane and safer but are more secure than a choke chain collar.
So why choose a martingale collar
Also referred to as a limited-slip collar, martingales are specifically designed for dogs with narrow heads and long necks, such as Greyhounds, Whippets, Salukis, Lurchers and Deerhounds, among others.
An extra loop is added to the collar as it’s made. This extra loop gives the martingale collar its distinguishing feature and acts as a control loop that gently tightens the larger loop to prevent your hound from slipping its collar. The tightening action doesn’t hurt but offers a safe and effective way to walk hounds safely and comfortably. A correctly adjusted martingale does not constrict a dog’s neck. They are loose and comfortable, only tightening when your dog tries to back out of its collar.
Overall, martingale collars are ideal for walking or training dogs. Equally, they are beneficial when caring for shy or timed sighthounds whose first instinct is to try and buck their collar when spooked or triggered. We advocate using a martingale collar with a dog lead when out and then swapping it to a house collar when your sighthound is relaxing at home.
