The Caspian tiger is an extinct tiger that had been evident in the wild up until the late 20th century and formerly inhabited the sparse forests and riverine corridors west and south of the Caspian Sea. The Caspian tiger was one of the biggest cats to have ever lived. It is closely related to the Siberian tiger and has been described as being somewhere between Siberian and Bengal tigers.
The main background colour of the Caspian Tiger pelt was brighter and more uniform than that of the Siberian tiger and it’s stripes were a mix of brown and cinnamon shades. The contrast between the summer and winter coat was sharp with the winter coat paler, with less distinct patterns.
The animal was declared officially extinct in 2003. Fortunately, according to a study by researchers at the University of Oxford, it has been discovered that the genes of the Caspian tiger live on today in the Siberian tiger. The problem is that intense poaching and habitat loss are now seriously threatening the survival of Siberian tigers in the wild.
